A Good Word: Paying the Price of Discipline

20 06 2009

“Grace requires for its use and fruition our co‑operation, which is given by the soul through its authentic voice, the will, in the form of discipline. Discipline in prayer is expressed by paying the cost of receiving and developing the grace. If we search for the manner in which this cost must be paid, it would seem that there is only one universal currency common to all human beings in the world, and that is the amount of time between the present moment and the moment of our death. It seems likely that, in the last analysis, every human desire has to be paid for in this currency.” (Ward, Reginald Somerset. A Guide for Spiritual Directors. London: A. R. Mowbray & Co., Ltd, 1957, p. 50-51.)

Ward talks about discipline and time invested as the currency for realizing the God-given desires we have to live more and lead more in grace.

Are there ways God is inviting you to be with him in your normal day-to-day? Are there practices He is drawing you to engage with Him? What gets in the way of responding to His loving call?
