“…Sabbath [is about trust]. Sabbath is turning over to God all those things–our money, our work, our status, our reputations, our plans, out projects–that we’re otherwise tempted to hold tight in our own closed fists, hold on to for dear life…. It is letting go, for one day out of seven, all those parts of our identities and abilities in which we are constantly tempted to find our security and discovering afresh that we are his children and that he is our Father and shield and defender.” (Buchanan, Mark. The Rest of God: Restoring Your Soul by Restoring Sabbath. Nashville: W Publishing Group, 2006, p. 98.)
A retreat day is a kind of Sabbath day, especially anyone for whom the Sabbath gathering day is more a work day than rest day. What among the things Buchanan lists are you tempted today to cling to for a sense of identity, importance or security? How might the Father be inviting you to find in Him what you’re tempted to find in these other places?
