Martin Luther on Prayer

7 01 2011

Here’s a good piece of Friday counsel on prayer from Martin Luther, theologian and Protestant reformer (1483-1546):

“It is a good practice to make prayer the first order of the morning and the last at night. Carefully watch out for false and deceptive thoughts which say: ‘Wait awhile. I shall pray in an hour or so. I must first look after this important matter.’ Such thoughts will lead away from prayer and will entangle you in other matters which will so demand your attention that nothing will happen in your prayers that day….” (Jerome M. Neufelder and Mary C. Coelho, editors. Writings on Spiritual Direction. New York: The Seabury Press, 1982, p. 150.)

[Prayer update on Unhurried Time writing: I am currently working through suggested revisions of chapter 1 by my editor friend. Please pray as I work through her good suggestions to come up with a final draft of this chapter.]
