Thank you for this blog today. What you said caused me to stop what I was doing, stop the mental fastrack of good intentions I find myself so easily trapped on. It made me stop and listen. Thank you again. Dave

Thanks, Michael. I am working on chapter 11 of my Unhurried project on spiritual practices to unhurry our lives. One of those is this rhythm. Many of us find it far easier to "encounter" than to "withdraw", at least withdraw in a holy, life-giving way. Good to hear from you. Grace!

I like that. "Rhythm of withdrawal and encounter". Time to recharge the batteries, or sharpen the blade. Without constant regeneration obtained in encountering God in times of personal reflection, we quickly degenerate into operating in the flesh, and thus burn out.

Donna--I'm not a Christian, but I agree whole-heartedly with the sentiment. Thirty years ago, my first Buddhist teacher, a Korean monk, used to say that reading about meditation was like mistaking the experience of reading a restaurant menu with eating a fine meal. The essence is missing! And yes, Buddhist practitioners go through the same phases--honeymoon, hard work, dry spell, rediscovery, purposeful attention, etc. Good post. Ken
